What Is Profound Autism?

The autism spectrum includes children with very different lives: from kids who excel in school and have bright futures ahead of them in Silicon Valley to children who are intellectually impaired, nonverbal, and will need 24/7 care all their lives. This week we focus on the children who are most impaired and a proposal to create a new category for them called profound autism.

Last week the CDC released a study estimating the number of kids on the autism spectrum who would fit into the profound autism category: 26.7 percent. Proponents of the new classification say that the needs of these children are at risk of being neglected because they are radically different from those who are less affected. We talk to parents and clinicians about how they think a separate category for profound autism could serve the kids included in it. We’ve also rounded up resources on helping kids on the spectrum communicate to get their needs met, when autism behaviors are caused by medical problems, and the problem of wandering in kids on the spectrum.
