Supporting Neurodiverse Students

A new school year offers an exciting fresh start, but it can also bring new challenges for children who are neurodiverse — that is, kids who have a learning disability, ADHD, or are on the autism spectrum. While these kids have a wide range of academic strengths and weaknesses, there are three areas where neurodiverse students tend to need support: behavioral issues, social challenges, and executive functioning.

This week on childmind.org, we discuss how school staff and parents can help neurodiverse kids (and others as well!) with things like handling intense feelings, staying organized, and making friends. Also, we look at some early signs of learning challenges, and offer more back-to-school tips for kids who’ve struggled with learning, and specific tips for kids with ADHD and selective mutism.
