The autism spectrum includes children with very different lives: from kids who excel in school and have bright futures ahead of them in Silicon Valley to children who are intellectually impaired, nonverbal, and will need 24/7 care all their lives. This week we focus on the children who are most impaired and a proposal to create a new category for them called profound autism . Last week the CDC released a study estimating the number of kids on the autism spectrum who would fit into the profound autism category: 26.7 percent. Proponents of the new classification say that the needs of these children are at risk of being neglected because they are radically different from those who are less affected.
